Date: September 1st 2025
In October 2025, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging will take effect. If you haven’t already started collecting your packaging data, now is the time to get the process underway.
It may seem like a complex task, but with a structured approach to collecting your company’s packaging data, the process becomes far more manageable.
Here are 5 essential tips to get you started:
1: Map out your responsibility
Emballageretur has developed a mapping tool to help you get started. You can find it on the member site, MitRetur.
2: Decide how you want to manage your data
Will you, for example, use an external platform such as Varefakta Packaging or GS1 Trade Packaging, set up your own systems to handle packaging data, or take another approach?
3: Consider whether you want to apply environmental graduation to your packaging
Environmental graduation requires thorough documentation. At Emballageretur, we have prepared a quick guide to help your company get started. You can find it on MitRetur. We also hosted a webinar on documentation for environmentally graduated fees in September – the recording is available on MitRetur.
4: Start collecting and processing your packaging master data
Once you have decided how you want to handle your data, the next step is to collect the basic information about your packaging – your packaging master data. This includes weight, material, quantities, and supplier information. Make sure to gather data from all relevant departments and suppliers to ensure a complete overview.
5: Prepare your packaging data for your first reporting
When your data is ready, it needs to be processed and structured to meet the EPR requirements. The more systematic you are from the start, the easier it will be to reuse the data for reporting, environmental graduation, and internal audits.
The first reporting will take place in November 2025.
As reporting is retrospective, your first reporting period (October 2025) will cover 1–15 November 2025 in Emballageretur.
Internal audit
Remember: As a company with producer responsibility, you are required to carry out internal audits. Emballageretur has created a template that guides you through the process. You can find it on our member site, MitRetur.
